I wonder how narrow tracks would be for pushing snow in the winter. I know that wide tyres suck.

Is that tractor a 2014 or 2016? I haven't seen the back fenders like that before, (mind you I haven't seen many JD track units).

Well...
Bit of a misconception here, that "suspension" is not really a full time suspension but a power hop prevention device.
The majority of the time it will not be active.

Tracks suffer no such tendency to hop so nothing to be gained from the same axle mount arrangement.

 

According to my dealer who got info at the pre release last year it won't be exactly the same as the wheeled versions but they will have some sort of bump absorbing device on the tractor (they seemed hesitant to give it a particular name). The main reason for the delayed release is because they are still working on the undercarriage.

 

During the farm progress show, I was invited to go see the new quad track, there is no type undercarriage suspension. The way they placed the boggies is suppose to make it smoother than competitors. Had can suspension also of course. Time will tell I guess.

I gather you mean cab suspension?

Do any track tractors have suspension within the tracks aside from just a walking beam arrangement?

 

From the pictures it looks like camoplast is building the track assemblies. Versatile is doing the same thing with the boogie arrangement which are also made by Camo.

How similar are these types of tractor (Row Trac, Quad Trac, Versatile) to the wheeled versions?

The Quads look(ed) the same as the ones with wheels on, do they use the same drive lines an how do they get them to go at the same speed with their small drive wheels?

 

The red quads are a very purpose built chassis, they are different than the wheeled models. The Deere one will be similar in the fact that it is a dedicated track model. NH uses an aftermarket system on their wheeled models but I hear they are working on a more streamlined model.

 

I too have experienced a "hop" of sorts with a quadtrac. Not sure if I can it power hop, I think the bigger thing to worry about is what is it doing to the tractor. I immediately pulled back as soon as it happened and later i got to thinking what is it actually hopping on? The tracks aren't air filled (obviously) so there must be huge amounts of abuse on the frame/axles/planetaries. Not something someone strives for.

 

IH went out in 1984, looks like they already did.

 

It's a common farmer misconception that power hop is limited to tires with air. Page 5, chapter 2 of the slick willie sales handbook "How to sell a track tractor to anyone", says that you must convince all purchasers that it takes no more than to purchase and drive a tracked tractor to become the worlds greatest expert.
